My whole life I have struggled with the concept of finding work that I love. A career that would never feel like I had to get up in the morning for, but rather something that I ponder,

“How the hell am I getting paid to do this?”

I had fleeting glimpses into this dream lifestyle; I met people like Anthony Bourdain, whom has my dream job in a nice little package from the Travel Channel, and I started to wonder how I too could get paid to ransack with locals and get into international escapades on someone else’s dime.

And a job just like that is still the wet dream of my adulthood, every step I take is one step closer to being an international jet setter living out of a suitcase with an eye full of adventure.

But, in the meantime, I realized that I couldn’t quite survive on my dashing internet presence and devastating good looks, I had to either become a gigolo or separate my job from my identity, hence my freelance business (www.gabrielworks.com), my random part time jobs that pay me to talk to people, and my monetized websites that are scattered across the four corners of the internet.

What I do isn’t exactly what I love, but it at least creates a separation of church and state that allows me to be ample in the most valuable commodity of all, time.

Essentially it boils down to the following,

a) I want my job to be an important part of my Identity. I want to enjoy the prestige, lifestyle, money and trappings of my job and want to talk to other people about what I do. I ask other people what they do and I evaluate them (even just a little) based on their answers. It would be great to be the boss or be an Important Person in my industry. If I lost my job I might feel ashamed and would try to get back into it with improved focus!

b) I do not care if my job is a part of my Identity. I have many interests and am always doing something new in my spare time. I would like to keep a boundary between my life outside work and my time spent at work. I want my job to provide me with enough money so that I can do the things I love to do when I’m not working. I enjoy time over money. The things I most enjoy in life are not easily commodifiable or are not associated with lucrative incomes.

So I propose to you a question, your job is your life, or life is your job? There is no wrong answer, but own up to what you want to do and just fucking do it.

I am a commodity.

Gabriel

Not only did he offer up an amazing philiosphy for the world to digest, but he gets serious bonus points for actually living the example he was trying to set. He knew that anyone could achieve anything, and that limitations would be a fate worse than death by mediocrity.

Read this excerpt about him and start realizing how much better you could be living your life now.

Lately I have felt like my life is trying to box me into a figment of my aspirations for the epic tale that I am trying to weave. It’s almost as if my dream lifestyle is getting a strong case of claustrophobia and the only antidote is a needle worth of adrenaline.

I live for this adrenaline; it’s the juice of my life. New experiences, meeting new people, going on fantastic spontaneous adventures, I need all of it like a slop dripping IV or I feel as if my life is falling apart around me.

That being said, the world around me is constantly trying to box me in, offering simple labels for who I am and what I can be. Whether it’s a job title, a friendship, relationship, or even family, everyone around me seems content in the notion of mediocrity. Unfortunately for all of us, mediocrity is worse than death for yours truly.

Don’t get me wrong, if you want to work a 9-5 job, have a white picket fence, kids, go out to dinner on Friday nights, and curse the day you were a child, then by all means sign up for that lifestyle. Its easy, and nearly everyone can get something out of such a decision. To me, I would rather live by the fly of my seat, not knowing where my next paycheck is coming from, how I am going to get food, or where I am going to stay before I have to get on a plane to head to the next location.

Could this lifestyle backfire? Possibly, I could end up dead in a ditch somewhere, but that notion doesn’t really bother me much.

Simply living life, “just because” sounds like the single worst concept I have ever heard of. Sure, there is something to be said for enjoying the moment for what it is, and staying positive, both of which are concepts that I hold true to my heart. Though, at some point, you have to take a step back, look at your life, and say, “What the fuck man?”

I say screw the box, do exactly what you want to do because you never know when you will die or how long it will take for your master plan to actually come into fruition.

Life is too short to not have a good time.

Listening to my own advice

Gabriel

Nearly everyone, at some point in their life, decides that it would be prudent to write their memoirs and get them published as a means of substantial passing before they are gone from this world.

Fame, power, nostalgia, lust, nearly any reason can be given for writing about one’s past, but the real question is, who really cares?

Sure, your friends, family, and your distant cousins might have some feign interest in reading about your life, but who knows if anyone outside your mother would ever even give it a glance over.

Sure, you could have some important life lesson(s) and write about how you gallivanted around the world trying to stop the spread of aids while wrestling alligators, but that doesn’t mean anyone will give a shit.

You life could have been the second coming of Christ himself, and no one would ever be the wiser.

In all likely hood, no one will read your story nor will they ever give a damn about anything you have ever done in your life, and even if you leave some powerful stamp on this fair planet, all will be forgotten in a short time.

That notion in itself is exactly why you should not only write about your life, but make it worth writing about.

It doesn’t matter if other people read your story and benefit from it, or if you get famous from your travel memoires or your attempts to cure indescribable diseases. It’s the mere act of not giving a fuck about what anyone else thinks of you and going for the things in your life that matter most.

From writing your memoires to traveling the world on a boat, it doesn’t matter if anyone else cares or even knows about your exploits, but you should care more than enough to follow through on them.

That’s why a life is worth writing about, because you wanted to live it just as powerfully as you wanted to write it.

Gabriel

So it’s the New Year, and despite my advice about giving the finger to New Year’s resolutions, you have decided to attempt to accomplish a laundry list of seemingly impossible tasks.

You are ready to dive head first into the deep end and wow the world with your jenesequa like natural talents and surpass all those that stand in opposition of your future glory. You will rise above all other dabblers and hackers in the fine art of your goal and become the pillar of success for future generations.

Either that or you will crash and burn faster than a 747 and wonder where the nearest Wal-Mart is so you can buy a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake in reparations.

The problem with starting working towards a new goal that everyone wants to be great now. They don’t have any desire to put in the time, energy, effort, and red bull fueled nights in order to achieve monstrous like results that are achieved by so many before them. I promise that if you think you have a natural talent for whatever it is that you are about to try, you will inevitably fail and fall flat on your ass thousands of times even if you are 8 feet tall and trying out for the NBA.

No one is hot shit enough to just fall into massive success, you have to take small steps that inch your progress forward like a ticking time bomb. After months and years of practice, only then will you become god like in your chosen area of study.

Sucks doesn’t it? Well learn to suck it up and deal with it because even the most notorious superstars of our lifetime got the shit kicked out of them on a daily basis for years until they became the aforementioned super humans that they are today.

From learning form for shooting a basket to a basic two step, you have to inch out your progress so that you can make clear and concise changes that will forever aid you in your path to glory.

You too can become the next Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, or Michael Symon, you just need to take small steps just like they did and eventually you will become a god among men.

Just give it a few years and a few steps

Big feet

Gabriel

I hate New Year’s resolutions.

Every year millions upon millions of people set benchmarks for the coming year. From losing 20 pounds to giving up drugs and taking aims to rid the world of leukemia, everyone jumps on the bandwagon of, “making a difference”

I laugh at people’s feeble attempts to change some aspect of their lives. I laugh because I know the patterns, routines, and idiosyncrasies that come to pass every year the clock strikes midnight.

We all revel in the party, the sex, and the drugs that come with the new year festivities, and when you get to break out your Dilbert 2011 calendar you are beyond ecstatic to write in all of your new activities for the new year that will lead to a bigger and better version of yourself.

Ultimately people step up, make a few drastic changes, and maintain their path to glory for a relatively short stint. Their motivation to follow through drops by about 113245 percent after the first week of the New Year and ultimately people fall back into their same mundane routines.

It is like watching a fat kid trying to grab a piece of cake while running in a hamster cage, you cant help but laugh and express dire all at the same time.

If people really gave a shit about changing some aspect of themselves, they would not wait for a new year to start hammering away at it. Making a judgment call to devour half of an apple pie and ten cosmos during New Year’s festivities with the desire to get in shape for the New Year is an oxymoron that you will never escape from.

Just like the budding humanitarian that puts off his new passion to work in soup kitchens for Sunday football, you too will fail if you make resolutions.

Instead of waiting to pull the trigger on January 1st, why not try doing something that matters today?

Instead of watching a marathon of Arrested Development, you could actually start writing that book that you have been clamoring on about. In Lou of watching the travel channel and pleasuring yourself to Anthony Bourdain, you could actually start researching and booking flights for that travel binge you always wanted to embark on.

It really is that simple people, if you want to make a lasting change in your life, don’t pussy foot around, start doing shit right now.

Do more

Gabriel

Ever felt like a supermodel jumped on your chest and injected your heart with a combination of Red Bull, cocaine, and vodka?

I have been there before, but this time it felt so much more invigorating.

Everyone has peaks and valleys in their lives, there is no such thing as the perfect person, with the white picket fence, and a family that looks transplanted from the Brady Bunch. That fairy tale never has and never will exist.

This isn’t depressing though, this is god damn liberating. If you don’t have to worry about creating the perfect world that you live in, you can focus on everything that is immediately in front of you, thereby turning the volume of your life to 11.

Its almost and existential feeling, when you truly realize that no one else really matters. Sure its, “living in the moment” and sure Eckhart Tolle may achieve wood from seeing this writing live, and in action, but that’s not the point. The point is that when you are completely focused on the two feet in front of you and less concerned about the undesirables that surround you that you feel as if you could have part ownership in world domination.

It’s a rising from the ashes because everyone has their blunders and failures. It’s the people who realize that their life is in ruins and actually do something about it that create the fairy tale endings. After all, what good is rising from the ashes if all you do is catch back on fire?

I heed that anyone who has felt downtrodden, depressed, unsatisfied, resentful, unhappy, unmotivated, and tired to recognize that they are currently knee deep in a bed of suet.

This isn’t the time to look to god, or to family, or to friends, because you probably have already done that (and you know damn well that it won’t work). What needs to be done is the same thing that the human population has been doing since its conception, rise once again.

But unlike the second coming of Christ, this does not take a miracle. Anyone who can recognize the shit position that they are in and make a mental, physical, and emotional change in regards to their daily actions can create a domino effect that will end in a second coming.

I have been shit, you have been shit, everyone get out of it and focus on right now.

Pick yourself up

Gabriel

Haters Gonna Hate

There will always be naysayers, dream crushers, punks, liars, doubters, non believers, anti evangelics, and destroyers of humanity no matter what corner of the world your find yourself in.

This is the ultimate crux position, as you are not only aware that they exist everywhere and you will be able to train yourself to ignore them, they will still always be there.

These haters are obvious and are defined as,

“A person that simply cannot be happy for another person’s success. Instead of giving acknowledgment in courtesy, a hater often pursues his/her point by exposing a flaw in the target subject. Hating, the result of being a hater, is not exactly jealousy. The hater doesn’t really want to be the person he or she hates, rather the hater wants to knock somelse [sic] down a notch.”

The key in deflecting haters Is obvious, keep on doing.

Trying to master the art of French cooking and get called out for a deflated soufflé? Haters gonna hate.

Want to save to travel the world but get denied a foreign visa? Haters gonna hate.

Looking to start your own internet business only to have everyone tell you that it has been done before? Haters gonna hate.

Keep moving forward, and you will find that the haters will never stop hating, so why not end their tyranny over your soul now?

Haters gonna suck it

Gabriel
